Holiday promotion ideas for salons, barbershops and spas

Ideas for Black Friday, Christmas and New Year's Eve for appointment-based businesses: gift cards, bundles, early booking, extended hours and messages to clients, with a week-by-week plan.

December is the busiest month of the year for most salons, barbershops and spas. Everyone wants to look good for the office party, family gatherings and New Year's Eve. The challenge is less about filling the calendar and more about handling demand well: getting the right clients into the right slots, selling more than a single service, and not burning out the team.

Here are promotion ideas that suit appointment businesses, and a timeline that works backwards from the holidays. In 2026, Black Friday falls on 27 November, and Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve fall on Thursdays.

Ideas that work for appointment businesses

Gift cards

The best holiday product for a service business. You get paid now, the client brings in a new person later, and many recipients book an extra service when they come in. Printed gift cards or vouchers with a unique number are enough; you do not need an online shop.

  • Offer a few fixed values and one or two popular services ("Haircut and beard", "60-minute massage").
  • Display them at the counter from mid-November and mention them in every client message.
  • Set a clear expiry date that complies with local consumer rules.

Bundles instead of discounts

A discount teaches clients to wait for discounts. A bundle raises the average spend and feels like a gift:

  • Barbershop: haircut, beard trim and hot towel for a fixed price
  • Salon: colour, treatment and blow-dry
  • Spa: massage plus a facial or a product to take home
  • Nail salon: gel manicure plus nail art for the party

Early booking for the busiest days

The days before Christmas and New Year's Eve fill up fast. Open those slots early, tell your regulars first, and let them book before you announce it publicly. Regulars appreciate it and you know where you stand weeks in advance.

Extended hours

Add early mornings or late evenings in the two weeks before the holidays. Mark them clearly in your booking app so clients can see and book them, and give staff extra pay or time off in January.

Black Friday without killing your margins

If you take part, keep it narrow: a product discount, a bundle, or a bonus on gift cards ("buy a 50 € card, get 10 € extra for yourself") rather than cutting your service prices. Gift card bonuses bring money in now and visits in January, which is usually a quiet month.

A thank-you for regulars

A small gift in December (a product sample, a hot drink in the waiting area, a handwritten card) costs little and is remembered. It works better than a discount because it does not lower the value of your service.

A January offer, announced in December

January is quiet for most service businesses. Give every December client a reason to come back: a voucher valid only from 7 to 31 January, or a free add-on to their next visit. You fill January using December's traffic.

Messages to send your clients

Push notifications through your own booking app or short texts work better than social media posts, because they reach people who already know you.

Early November, regulars only:

Hi [name], the December calendar is open! Our regulars get first pick of slots before Christmas and New Year's Eve. Book yours now: [link]

Mid November, everyone:

Gift cards are here 🎁 Give [service] to someone you love, available at the counter. Holiday slots are filling fast: [link]

Early December:

Only a few slots left before 24 December. Extra early and late appointments are open this week: [link]

After the holidays:

Thank you for a wonderful year! Your January bonus: [offer], valid 7 to 31 January.

Keep it to three or four messages across the season. More than that and clients start ignoring them.

A week-by-week plan

Early November

  • Decide your bundles, gift card values and January offer.
  • Plan extended hours and confirm them with your team.
  • Open December booking for regulars.

Mid November

  • Put gift cards on display and in your messages.
  • Post on Instagram: your bundles, gift cards and the team.
  • Black Friday (27 November): one simple offer, if any.

Early December

  • Open all December slots publicly.
  • Remind clients that the busiest days are filling up.
  • Order extra products and supplies for the rush.

Mid to late December

  • Hand out the January offer with every visit.
  • Reply quickly to booking requests and messages.
  • Confirm appointments for the last days before the holidays, so last-minute cancellations can be refilled. Our guide on reducing no-shows has more on this.

January

  • Thank-you message and January offer reminder.
  • Count the results: gift cards sold, bundle sales, new clients, January bookings from the offer.
  • Ask happy December clients for a review. Here is how to do it within Google's rules.

The part most businesses forget

Busy seasons are when tired staff make mistakes and clients feel rushed. Schedule real breaks, cap the number of extended-hour days per person, and keep a few buffer slots for emergencies and running late. A calm team in December brings clients back in January.

If you want push notifications, extended hours and discount days in your own branded booking app, Applio does all three, and you can try it free for 14 days.
